Walking in the Spirit Part Three
David Yarborough

In our Christian walk, the Apostle Paul’s exhortation in Galatians 5 to “walk by the Spirit” is both a profound invitation and a practical guide for daily living. This concept, explored in a recent sermon, offers a roadmap for overcoming the desires of the flesh and living a life that reflects the character of Jesus through the fruit of the Spirit.

Understanding the Battle Within

Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, highlighting an internal battle between our sinful nature and the Spirit’s desires. This struggle is akin to having a phone in airplane mode—disconnected from the network, unable to receive messages. Similarly, when we walk in the flesh, we disconnect from the Spirit’s guidance and power.

The Call to Walk in the Spirit

Walking in the Spirit is about maintaining a continual relationship with Jesus, akin to abiding in Him. It’s not about striving in our strength but leaning into the Spirit’s power. This journey is like driving uphill; we must engage the drive gear, inviting the Spirit to empower us, rather than slipping into reverse or neutral.

Recognize, Repent, Replace: The Three Rs

When we find ourselves in the flesh, the sermon suggests a practical approach: Recognize, Repent, and Replace.

  1. Recognize: Be aware of when your peace is disturbed. This is often a signal that you’re slipping into fleshly patterns. Ask yourself, “What’s my sinful response?” and “What lie am I believing?”
  2. Repent: Confess your sins to God. First John 1:9 reminds us that God is faithful to forgive. It’s about agreeing with God about our actions and turning from them.
  3. Replace: Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you and replace your fleshly responses with His fruit. This is not behavior modification but heart transformation, allowing Jesus to live through you.

Developing Intimacy with the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is waiting for us to depend on Him. Developing intimacy with Him involves slowing down, seeking His voice, and being open to His guidance. This relationship is not just about knowing about God but experiencing His presence and power in our lives.

Practical Steps to Walk in the Spirit

  • Start Your Day with an Invitation: Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you and guide you.
  • Talk to the Spirit: Throughout your day, engage in conversation with the Holy Spirit. Ask for guidance, thank Him for His presence, and invite Him into your decisions.
  • Listen and Obey: Be attentive to the Spirit’s voice and step out in faith when He prompts you.
  • Watch and See: Observe what God does as you obey His leading.

Conclusion: Embrace the Journey

Walking in the Spirit is a journey of transformation, not a destination. It’s about recognizing our need for God, repenting of our sins, and replacing our fleshly desires with the Spirit’s fruit. As we cultivate intimacy with the Holy Spirit, we’ll find ourselves living more like Jesus, empowered by His presence and guided by His love.

Let us embrace this journey, knowing that the Holy Spirit is eager to help us, waiting for us to depend on Him. As we do, we’ll experience the abundant life that Jesus promised, marked by love, joy, peace, and all the fruit of the Spirit.
