The Power of His Word (Day 6)
David Yarborough

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. ~ John 1:1-4

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. While I agree that a good picture or illustration can help bring deeper meaning and understanding to our words, I also believe there is great power in our words. Have you ever had someone speak harsh and critical words that still resound in your head and heart like a curse? Has a timely word of encouragement ever encouraged you to keep pushing ahead with faith and perseverance?

Yesterday, we began to look at this title that John used in the beginning of His Gospel to describe Jesus, “the Word.” Jesus Christ is the Living Word of God. As we stated yesterday, words are a spoken or written form of communication that conveys meaning. We get to know someone as we listen to them speak and hear their words. Over time, a person’s words will betray them and often let you know what they are really thinking. The mouth speaks out of an overflow of the heart, and so we can hear the deep thoughts and heart felt desires if we will keep listening to the unfiltered words that they speak.

Jesus is the Word of God. One way to define this is that Jesus is the ultimate, heartfelt communication of God the Father. God was speaking loud and clear by sending His son Jesus Christ into the world to die for the sins of the world. Before the arrival of Jesus, the Lord had sent prophets to his people to speak on his behalf. Men like Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea all communicated on behalf of God, but none of them ever communicated so fully and clearly on God’s behalf as His Son Jesus Christ, the Word of God.

We refer to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, so you may know the word Gospel literally means “good news.” Jesus Christ brings us a really good word from heaven then. In the person of Jesus, God is speaking words of hope, words of reconciliation, words of love, words of forgiveness, and words of
restoration. God did not send Jesus with angry message of frustration and contempt. Who could have blamed for God being done with sinful humanity after we ignored and rebelled against him time and time in history. The Lord wasn’t quitting on us or giving up on us though. As we said yesterday, Jesus was offering a new beginning and fresh start. There are so many messages that God is speaking to us in and through Jesus? And I promise, it is all good stuff. We may need to repent and adjust our lives to Him, but there has never been a better word to human beings than Jesus!

Questions and Reflections:

1. God is speaking to us through His Son Jesus. What do you think He wants to say to you today?
What word do you need to hear from God today?
2. When was the last time you felt you really heard from God? If it has been a while, why do you
think that is?
3. What would help you hear from God more consistently?
